The South Coast Botanic Garden is a unique 87-acre garden environment. The garden was once a landfill and now has over 150,000 beautifully landscaped plants and trees. Some of the more diverse plants include flowering fruit trees, redwoods, ginkgos and pittosporum. The more popular gardens are the Water-wise Garden, Herb Garden, English Rose Garden, and Garden of the Senses. A small lake and stream bed attract various birds such as ducks, geese, coots, and blue heron. There are walking and shuttle tours and picnic areas. Horticultural lectures, classes and plant shows are provided for all visitors. This is an ideal place for school field trips!

Opened to the public in 1982, this estate is not only known as being one of the first homes in Beverly Hills, but also for its six sloping acres of veritable lush gardens featuring exotic tropical and subtropical specimens. A delight to visit any time of the year because there is always something in bloom. Terraced patio gardens connected by brick paths with fountains and ponds help create a private garden world! Reservations are required for guided tours.
Rental facilities available for photo shoots, meetings, luncheons, and weddings.

Located in the San Rafael Hills, this is truly a secluded, lush, dense garden containing over 100,000 plants which includes one of the largest displays of camellias in the world! There is also an extensive performing arts program throughout the year that includes stage and musical performances and flower and craft shows. This interactive interpretive center is nestled in a large canyon at an elevation of five hundred feet. The center features recordings of whales, dolphins and sea lions. Visitors can learn about kelp forests and ocean currents. There is also a monthly nature day-camp for children 5-12 years old. Docent tours and picnic areas are provided. School and group tours are by reservation only. Hiking permits and maps are also available.

High Desert Wildlife Sanctuaries

Located in the high desert of Antelope Valley are eight County wildlife preserves. Activities at these sanctuaries include birdwatching, hiking and horseback riding. Visitors can view spectacular floral displays normally in bloom between mid-March and late May. Wildlife seen on the preserves vary from earthbound creatures such as the horned lizards, chuckwallas and rattlesnakes, to majestic prairie falcons and golden eagles. In the spring, Joshua trees and other large shrubs provide nesting sites for a variety of songbirds. Other protected animals which may be seen are the kit fox, desert tortoise and Mojave ground squirrel. All areas are closed to any sort of vehicle entry. No camping allowed. No drinking water available.

This 745-acre park of unique geological rock formations is located in the high desert near Agua Dulce Springs. The park features a history trail tour of the Tatavian Indians and Spanish settlers. Other activities include: campfire nature talks, equestrian programs, a junior ranger program, seasonal special events, hiking and horseback riding. Picnic areas are provided. Organized youth group camping and school tours are by reservation only. The park is also available for motion picture filming, weddings, and large group picnics and parties.

Placerita Canyon is a 350-acre natural park and is home to the famous "Oak of the Golden Dream," one of the first places where gold was discovered in this great state. A natural history museum, live animal exhibits, an astronomy club, summer nature camp, and moonlight hikes are just some of the fun activities to do here! Picnic areas available.

This 1,310-acre natural park has some of the most unusual rock formations in California! The park contains rugged wilderness and is one mile away from the famous San Andreas fault. Park elevation starts at 4,200 feet and climbs to 6,500 feet above sea level! You can hike with a ranger or ride a horse on one of the picturesque trails. There are geology walks, live reptile programs, and a natural history museum. The park also provides seasonal events such as "Full Moon Hikes" and "Meteor Shower Viewing." Other activities include: rock climbing, campfire programs, bird watching, picnicking, junior ranger program, and outreach presentations. School and group tours are available by reservation.

This 184-acre natural park is located at the base of Mt. Wilson. There are five miles of nature trails and also an equestrian trail. The canyon is very lush and has beautiful displays of local flora and fauna. Other activities include: campfire talks, picnicking, moonlight walks, bird watching, and guided hikes to the falls. Camping is available for schools, group tours and youth groups. The park also provides training programs for naturalist docents and junior park rangers.

Located near the Angeles National Forest, this park offers visitors a variety of nature trails that traverse over one thousand acres of chaparral and riparian vegetation. There is also a natural history museum and a zoo. Throughout various times of the year, the park sponsors wildlife fairs that include animal exhibits, crafts, native Indian dance programs, and food booths. The park also has a junior ranger program. Reservations are available for tours, youth group camping and organized group picnicking.

Other recreational amenities include: recreational vehicle camp sites, trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, play equipment, gazebos, and group rental picnic areas. Food and beverage concessionaires are provided.

This facility has two bodies of water. The upper lake is for sailing, power boating, water and jet skiing, fishing, boat rentals and a tackle bait shop. The lake is stocked with various fish such as bass, trout and catfish. The lower lake is for non-power boating and canoeing. Swimming season on the lower lake runs from mid-May to mid-September. Some of the recreational activities include: hiking, biking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, and recreational vehicle and tent camping. Rental group picnic areas are available for up to 600 persons.

In 1932 this area was the site of the 10th Olympiad. In 1984 Los Angeles again hosted the Olympics, drawing athletes from 140 nations. To serve as a continual reminder of the events, 140 trees have been planted together on the hills where the 1932 events took place. Each tree represents a nation that took part in the 1984 Olympics. Activities include hiking, fishing, and group and family picnicking. Other amenities include children's play areas, community center, and a man-made lake.
